It’s been awhile
I wanted to update you, my awesome spuds, on all my developments since I posted last. Why the absence? After I created this site, I got distracted by social media (Facebook, Reddit, Instagram, Twitter) and stopped updating this site. But my spuds have remained true and I want you to know what I’ve been up to.
Mary, the Queen of Creativity
Over the last several years, my creativity has blossomed into new, unexpected areas. It all started when I moved in with my wonderful friend, Mary, an extremely creative Aries. An experienced faux painter, she creates all kinds of cool stuff like fabric baskets, fine art paintings, dyed silk scarves, afghans, blankets just to name a few.
Mary set off my creative flame by suggesting I dye silk scarves with her. It was a great deal of fun and I loved all the colors. There was just something so satisfying about signing your own creation.
So I started dyeing other items like altar cloths, makeup bags, eyeglass cases and even pet scarves!
It’s a process that requires painting on the dye, washing the silk, then drying and finally setting the dye with an iron.
Wire Wrapped Jewelry
My creative spark had be lit and I found that Mary had some jewelry kits from those monthly subscriptions. She hadn’t really done much with them. So I organized all the kits and along with crystals and gemstones I acquired, I started wire-wrapping jewelry which came rather naturally to me. Of course, I made all kinds of jewelry (necklaces, bracelets, pendants, earrings, headbands, pendulums, rings, anklets etc). This was something that was completely my own and I loved doing it!
I received great feedback from friends, so I started Intentional Jewelry as a gallery for my pieces. Wire wrapping jewelry is just so easy for me and it’s quite therapeutic.
Fine Art Painting
So one night, Mary asks me if I would like to paint on a canvas. I had never tried it. She gave me a small canvas and some acrylic paints and off I went. This was my first painting, titled Dusk (11×14).
I painted several more canvases and posted it for my friends on Facebook. One of my neighbors, who’s wife was one my FB friends, came by to suggest to me, that perhaps I should do something else. According to him, painting was not my thing and I really shouldn’t waste my time on pursuing it. He was a friend. I had not asked him for an opinion but he felt it was necessary. I was shocked and hurt. So for awhile, I stopped painting, feeling that maybe he was right. I’m not an “artist”. Who am I kidding?! I should stick with making jewelry and be happy with that. After considering his suggestion for awhile, I came to the conclusion of “Fuck him, he doesn’t know shit!”
I felt the best way to break free of the “I’m not an artist” mentality, is to paint the one thing that I would absolutely not want to paint: A Vagina! So, of course, I did! Rolled Hard and Put Away Wet (11×14)
Yeah, well I haven’t stopped painting since! For the last few years, I have painted proficiently. About four months ago, one of my pieces went viral on Reddit. Rainbow Sky (24×24) received 6169 upvotes (94% upvoted) and more than 28,000 views, ending up on the Front Page!
I was overwhelmed. It was like being on a train that you can’t stop. But eventually it did stop and I had to come down from the mountain. That’s wasn’t easy. Yet, I continue to paint. I find it relaxing and enjoyable. I have painted 214 canvases so far and am working on my next one.
Selling My Art
Having prolifically created so much art, I needed somewhere to sell it. So Mary and I went to the Gilbert Art Walk under her business name, Unique Art Designs. We sold our silks and paintings. We weren’t allowed to sell jewelry and it turned out that there wasn’t much art there. More people selling crafts than anything else.
Of course, we went back again and again! We even had a friend, Daniel, another creative type, with us.
We finally moved our operations to MACfest in Mesa. We had more success there and I could sell my jewelry!
We were often joined by Jinx (a.k.a. Alyssa Howell) who actually painted my portrait! She is a true Spud! This is her with said portrait –
So my next stage will be art galleries. Obviously, the good ones.
Facebook is great thing, but socially, I’m not a G-rated, family friendly type person. I like dick jokes and vulgar language. I’m an adult with an adult sense of humor. But I offend the moral majority. For example, I post a meme “Happy Halloweenie” and someone reports me. The picture is removed and I’m put in Facebook jail for a week.
I was incensed. It was so innocuous. Yet someone, a “friend”, was offended and reported me. I didn’t want to go through that again.
I realized there needed to be a place where people can be social AND adults. So I created Tater’s Spuds to be that place. It’s a closed group so only members can see what is posted. So join up today, my Spuds!
